Your Copy is Missing Something if You Don’t Have a Brand Voice

Standing out from the crowd and cutting through the noise are some of the biggest marketing challenges small businesses face. Because, well, there really just aren’t many markets that aren’t saturated at this point (there are more than 32 million small business in this country, after all!), and that means there are a lot of people vying for your customers’ attention. And while there are a few things you can think about doing to position your brand, product, or service offering as something unique, there is one way to do that without adding more tasks to your list or costing you anything extra. That thing is creating a brand voice that is unique to you and using it whenever you’re writing (AI powered or not). Ready to learn more about this free and powerful tool that can help you write more effective copy? Read on to dive deeper into brand voice and how to create yours.

What is brand voice?

Brand voice is the distinct personality your company conveys through its words, messages, and copy. It’s how customers experience your brand without ever directly talking to you or someone on your team. A brand voice has 3 components: voice, tone, and style.

Voice: Brand voice refers to the overall personality and character of a brand. It is the consistent tone and style of communication that reflects the brand's identity.

Tone: Tone refers to the attitude or emotion conveyed in a specific piece of copy. Tone can vary depending on who you are talking to (read: your audience), the purpose of the piece, and the emotions you want to evoke.

Style: Style refers to how the content is presented. It includes the choice of language, vocabulary, sentence structure, and overall way something is written. Style can vary based on where the copy lives (ex. a blog that is a touch more conversational than the website copy) and what you are trying to communicate.

Why is having a brand voice important?

There are a couple of reasons having a brand voice is important. The first is it helps you understand “who” your brand is and “how” it talks to people—which is important whether you’re a solopreneur or running a business with a team. That’s because you want potential and current customers to have a consistent impression of and interactions with your brand; what you don’t want is for your brand to feel different depending on where someone is at the time (we see you Instagram captions reading totally different than website copy).

Brand voice also helps set you apart from your competitors while building trust in potential customers at the same time—making them more likely to choose you over others when they are finally ready to buy. This is because a strong brand voice helps establish an emotional connection with customers because your brand has a relatable personality.

Lastly (but related to the first point), having a brand voice is a really helpful tool for anyone who is writing copy on behalf of your brand. Whether that is you, your team, or a professional copywriter you’re bringing on for a project, knowing your brand voice (and having it documented) is the thing everyone needs to write copy that sounds like you!
